The rulers of Khairagarh claim descent from the ancient Nagvanshi clan which dominated much of Central India in the 15th and 16th centuries. Rani Saheb Sharda Devi was born into a staunch political family as her mother, Rani Padamvati Devi was a Health Minister in the Congress National Party for two terms maintaining a close relationship with Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, her father Raja Briendra Bahadur Singh was Deputy Home Minister of the State and her brother Rajkumar Shivendra Bahadur Singh was elected to the Lok Sabha for three terms and was best friends with Rajiv Gandhi, the 6th Prime Minister of India. Apart from politics, the Khairagarh family have always been musically inclined as the town is home to the first music university in Asia, Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya. Given this background, Rani Sharda Devi was viewed as an eloquent, graceful and intelligent woman by her peers with a profound love for food, culture, art and travel.

On 5th February, 1955, she married Rawal Saheb Chakrapani Singh of Bissau, a grand affair between two prominent families of Indian aristocracy. As you wander around the room, you will notice an array of old photographs of Rani Saheb Sharda Devi and her family members from Khairagarh.
